Introduction:
Japanese singer-songwriter Lilas Ikuta (幾田りら) released “Start of Something New (Lilas Version)” on November 6, 2026. The song is a special cover of the beloved track from Disney Channel’s High School Musical, created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the musical film’s original Japanese broadcast.
Known internationally as the vocalist of YOASOBI under the name ikura, Lilas Ikuta brings her distinctive vocal style to this familiar Disney song. Her version features an arrangement that preserves the spirit of the original while presenting the track with a fresh interpretation and entirely English lyrics.
The release is also connected to her music-travel documentary, Lilas Ikuta DREAMS & MEMOR.
Lilas Ikuta Reinterprets “Start of Something New”:
Originally performed by Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez in the first High School Musical film, “Start of Something New” is one of the musical’s most recognizable songs.
The track accompanies the memorable moment when the two main characters meet and unexpectedly discover their shared love of singing. Its message revolves around new encounters, unexpected possibilities, and the excitement of beginning something meaningful.
For Lilas Ikuta, the song carries a special connection to her own musical journey. Her childhood experiences in the United States and her memories of High School Musical helped influence her early interest in music.
A New Interpretation of a Beloved Disney Song:
One of the defining features of Lilas Ikuta's version is its full English-language performance. The decision preserves the original song's lyrical language while introducing a new vocal interpretation.
Her clear and expressive singing brings a different character to the familiar melody. Rather than attempting to recreate the original performance, the cover allows the song to exist in a new musical context while respecting the qualities that made it popular.
For listeners who grew up watching High School Musical, the release offers a nostalgic return to an important Disney musical moment. For fans of Lilas Ikuta, it provides an opportunity to hear her explore a song that holds personal significance.
Conclusion:
Lilas Ikuta's “Start of Something New (Lilas Version)” is more than a simple cover of a popular Disney song. Released as part of the 20th-anniversary celebration of High School Musical in Japan, the track reflects the personal connection between the singer and a musical that helped inspire her early interest in music.
By performing the song entirely in English and bringing her own vocal character to its familiar melody, Lilas offers a fresh interpretation while preserving the original's uplifting spirit.
Together with the documentary Lilas Ikuta DREAMS & MEMORIES, the release provides fans with a closer look at the experiences that shaped her artistic journey. For listeners who grew up with High School Musical or have followed Lilas Ikuta through her solo career and YOASOBI, this special release is a meaningful celebration of music, memories, and new beginnings.
