Introduction:

The Autumn 2026 music calendar has gained a deeply emotional surprise from one of Japan’s most celebrated rock bands. On October 16, 2026, RADWIMPS officially released their latest digital single, “汝、星のごとく” (Nanji, Hoshi no Gotoku / “Thou, Like a Star”) — a previously unannounced second theme song written for the hit film 汝、星のごとく (You, Like a Star) , which opened in theaters nationwide on October 9, 2026. This release is significant for multiple reasons: it is the second theme song RADWIMPS created for the same film, following the official theme “夕星-ゆうづつ-” (released October 2), and it is the very first song that Yojiro Noda handed to director Michihito Fujii during the film’s production — a track born in the earliest days of the project that was kept hidden until now.

The Sound: A Counterpoint of Pain and Vitality:

While the official theme “夕星-ゆうづつ-” is described as “a song wrapped in a quiet yet grand worldview, containing a tenderness that envelops the protagonist,” the newly released “汝、星のごとく” offers a starkly different emotional palette. According to official descriptions, “汝、星のごとく” is “a song that contains the pain and difficulty of living that Kai and Akimi carry, and the fierce intensity of the lives they walked” — a track that captures the tremendous energy of the entire film. Together, the two songs express the “stillness and motion” (sei to dō) reminiscent of the Seto Inland Sea — the film’s setting. The contrast between the two tracks allows listeners to experience the film even more deeply.

Why “汝、星のごとく” Matters:

A Hidden Gift from the Production’s Earliest Days The revelation that “汝、星のごとく” was the first song Noda handed to director Fujii adds a layer of historical significance to its release. It is not a B-side or a rejected track — it is the song that began the entire musical journey of the film, created before the official theme was even conceived. A Complete Musical Portrait With the release of both songs, RADWIMPS has provided a complete musical portrait of 汝、星のごとく. The two tracks — one tender and enveloping, the other fierce and vital — together capture the full emotional spectrum of Kai and Akimi’s 15-year journey. As one official description noted, listening to both songs allows for an even deeper appreciation of the film. A Testament to RADWIMPS’ Creative Range RADWIMPS has long been celebrated for their ability to craft music that serves the stories they accompany — from Your Name to Weathering with You to Suzume. “汝、星のごとく” demonstrates their continued mastery of this craft, offering a song that stands on its own merits while also deepening the viewer’s understanding of the film. A Song About the Courage to Be “Unsightly” Noda’s comment about wanting to be “proudly on the unsightly side” is a powerful statement in an era dominated by curated perfection and social pressure. The song is not about being flawless — it is about the beauty that can only be found when you stop trying to be “correct” and simply live. It is a message that resonates far beyond the film, speaking to anyone who has ever felt like they didn’t fit the mold.

Conclusion:

RADWIMPS’ “汝、星のごとく” is a powerful, emotionally charged companion piece to “夕星-ゆうづつ-” and a worthy addition to the band’s extraordinary catalog of film music. As the first song created for the film — a hidden gem that waited months to be shared — it carries a unique weight and intimacy. Together with its companion theme, it offers a complete musical portrait of a story about love, loss, and the courage to live imperfectly. For longtime fans of RADWIMPS’ film work, this release is a reminder of why they remain the gold standard for cinematic rock in Japan. For viewers of 汝、星のごとく, it is a chance to experience the film’s world in a new dimension. And for anyone who has ever felt the pressure to be “correct” — this one is for you.
